Such paintings were created for European and American markets where the desire for all things ‘exotic’ was in high demand. Foreign trade was established in China in the 1600’s. Chinese ports were closed to foreign trade in 1757 except in Macao and Canton. The hongs (factories) of foreigners were located on a small restricted area outside of the city walls. Business was strictly monitored by an organization of Chinese merchants responsible to the Emperor. These extreme restrictions remained in effect until the Opium War of 1814.
