Description
Edo period, 17/18th c., underglaze blue decoration, 15.5”diam.
Porcelains produced in the Arita (Northern Kyushu) kilns included plates inspired by Chinese underglaze blue kraak porcelain. As a result of warring political factors in China in the 17th c., the kilns at Ching-te Chen were burned down, and the supply of blue and white porcelain was disrupted. The newly developed Japanese kilns in Arita filled the demand for high-fired ceramics. By 1640 the Dutch East India Company was the only trading partner permitted by Japan to handle the trade of porcelain to the world.
