Cf. Moses Soyer, born in 1899 in Borisoglebsk, Russia, emigrated to the United States with his family in 1912. He and his two brothers, Raphael, a twin, and Issac, both painters, studied art in New York City. Moses Soyer attended school first at Cooper Union, in Greenwich Village and then at the Ferrer Art School where he became acquainted with the Social Realist School of painting, known best as the Ashcan School. He studied under two of Americas the acclaimed Social Realist masters, George Bellows and Robert Henri. His wife, Ida was a dancer and she is the subject of many of Moses Soyers' paintings.
