Description
Howard Chandler Christy (American (New York/ Ohio), 1872-1952). "Portrait of a Gentleman with Cane" - 1907, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right. Possibly a portrait of President Theodore Roosevelt during his presidency, painting depicts a stately middle-aged gentleman seated in a carved wooden chair at nearly full length, the man with high hairline, moustache, and strong eyes peering through wire rimmed spectacles at the viewer, the subject wearing a black suit over white high collared shirt and red tie, his left leg crossed over his right with his right arm lying over the arm rest at his side and his left hand, with ring to ring finger, grasping a metal handled cane or walking stick at his side. Stamp to verso of canvas reading "Prepared by E.W. Devoe & Co. New York". Framed approximately 61.5" x 50", unframed approximately 52" x 40".
