Official 1915 Souvenir Ad Display Featuring Johnson v. Willard Fight Scenes and Images
Directly after Jess Willard's stunning upset of Jack Johnson for the World's Heavyweight Championship, Johnson's manager Jack Curley, seeking to cash in on lasting interest in the match, produced what is billed as the "Only Authorized Souvenir Pictures of Interesting Incidents of the Great World Championship Battle between Jess Willard and Jack Johnson, Havana, Cuba, April 15, 1915."This extremely scarce ad piece is framed to an overall size of 29" by 32" and is sepia toned in color. It contains a galaxy of 30 extraordinary images in various sizes of the fight and events leading up to it. Included are photos of both Johnson and Willard before and during the contest, Willard's stunning knockout of Johnson, their managers and promoters, and even images of General Villa's Fight Permit in both English and Spanish. The top of the piece shows a very large panoramic view of the battle in progress at the Oriental Park Race Track in Havana, Cuba. The piece has benefited from minor professional restoration. Conservation mounted and framed. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
