Casey Stengel's 1948 Oakland Acorns PCL Championship Ring and Presentation Photo
In 1946, the Oakland Oaks hired Charles "Casey" Stengel, the former manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers and Boston Braves of the National League as their manager. He responded with second and fourth place finishes before the club won its much celebrated championship in 1948. The 1948 Oaks were nicknamed the "Nine Old Men" in that many of the star players were older veterans of the major leagues, including Ernie Lombardi, Cookie Lavagetto, Nick Etten, and George Metkovich. There were younger players on the team as well, including rookie second baseman Alfred "Billy" Martin. Casey propelled himself back to the major leagues as manager of the Yankees by guiding Oakland to their first PCL Championship in 21 years. It was in Oakland that Stengel developed his talent for "platooning," i.e., juggling his lineup to maximize each player's potential in given situations, that served him so famously as manager of the New York Yankees. Casey's beautiful 14k gold ring has a white metal inscription on top "1948 Oakland Acorns" surrounded by "Pacific Coast League Champions" in gold on green enamel. Crossed bats with an acorn/oak leaf design decorate both sides. "Stengel" is engraved on the inside band. Accompanying the ring is an 11" by 14" framed photo from the Stengel household picturing the Championship celebration for the Oaks on the steps of City Hall. At center stage is Casey, apparently receiving this ring. Ring size: 11". LOA from the Stengel family.
