Jackie Robinson Signed Baseball, Photograph and Letter
In the mid 1960's, Jackie Robinson underwent surgery at Mt. Vernon Hospital in New York for an old knee injury- a torn cartilage- which, from time to time gave him a great deal of pain. Around the same time a thirteen year old newspaper boy named Douglas Brown was treated at the Mt. Vernon Hospital, who had broken his leg when he was grazed by a car on his newspaper route. At the hospital, Jackie visited many of the young patients and that was where Douglas and Jackie developed a relationship that lasted many years. Featured are two items that Jackie gave to Douglas at the hospital. Robinson's side-panel autograph, "Best Wishes, Jackie Robinson," appears perfectly framed within the horseshoe-shaped ribbon of the baseball's seams. The slightly toned surface of the unofficial ball accentuates the vibrant ink produced by Jackie's pen. With the ball, Doug also acquired a 3 1/2" by 5 1/2" photo of Jackie personalized, "To My Friend Doug, Best Wishes, Jackie Robinson." A typed signed letter to Douglas is also included with the ball and photo. This letter was dated a few years after the hospital stay.

The signature on the ball rates a 9, and the ball itself is in excellent to near mint condition. The photograph is in excellent condition with Jackie's signature rating an 8. The letter is in excellent condition. The letter and photo are framed and also included is an original newspaper article of, 'Notes From A Hospital Bed' by Jackie Robinson that was published in a newspaper where Jackie speaks about his stay at the hospital and where Douglas Brown is mentioned. Also included is the original police blotter when Douglas was hit by the car. LOAs from PSA/DNA and JSA.
