Description
A beautiful Boeotian terracotta protome of a goddess, late 5th - early 4th Century BC, her hair is arranged in an opulent, wavy coiffure, and she wears a polos whose bands fall down to her shoulders along with a necklace with triangular elements. Striking contrast between the archaic facial features, especially the eyes and nose, and the classical coiffure and chin. Front part mould-made, joined at the sides to the clay plaque at the back. H: 6 ½ in (16.4 cm). A wonderful piece and a masterpiece of Greek ceramic art. Cf. Mallard-Besques, Catalogue Raisonne du Louvre, 1954, p. 93, nos. c59-C61 & C65, pls. LXVI & LXVIII; Ex collection of Helen Schou, acquired 1930-1940.
