Description
G. West & Sons (likely Alfred John West (British, 1857-1937)). "Wendur, Galatea & Marjorie, 1885", original photograph, embossed shop stamp lower right "West & Son, Copyright, South Sea & Gosport". Photograph depicts three ships, the Wendur, the Galatea, and the Marjorie, each with full sails up, lined up in succession behind each other at center with figures scattered about the decks, the photo likely taken just before the start of the Ailsa Craig America's Cup match of 1885 of which only 2 ships of 7 survived, including the Wendur and the Marjorie. As inscribed to plate below image, photograph was in the private marine collection at Trinchera Ranch of Malcom Forbes (American, 1919-1990), founder and publisher of Forbes Magazine and renowned yachting enthusiast. Coincidently, the defender of the 1885 America's Cup was a man named John Malcolm Forbes (American, 1847-1904) of the wealthy Boston Forbes family. Framed approximately 17.875" x 20", sight size approximately 7.25" x 9.125".
