Erwin Rommel (German, 1891-1944). A handwritten letter from the later WWII Nazi Field Marshall dated September 2, 1911 written at the age of 20 while attending the Officer Cadet School in Danzig, Germany and addressed to Lucia Maria Mollin, the woman he was courting at the time and eventually married in 1916. The letter written in German translates roughly to "What are you really up to? Does the Herr Lieutenant burden you with so much work that you no longer have a minute for me? This is unkind. Tonight I shall have some free time around quarter to seven and you could join me if you wish. Tomorrow I shall be bicycling to Karlshouse with Denke and some young colleagues. Erwin Rommel". Noting that the signature to this letter differs greatly from the one he used formally during his time with the Third Reich, it is important to recognize that this letter was written early in Rommel's life and is a letter of personal intent, thereby likely indicating a more casual or unpracticed signing of his name. Accompanying the letter is its envelope, which is also inscribed by the infamous WWII officer with a cancelled stamp from Danzig, also with a black and white photograph of the Field Marshall. The presentation is framed with glass to both sides making the entire contents of the letter visible. Also accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from The Kenneth W. Rendell Gallery of New York and Massachusetts, a renowned and recognized authority on historical autographs. Framed approximately 18" x 19.125", letter sight size approximately 6.625" x 5.375".
