(Helen L. Searle (Pattison), New York/Illinois, 1830-1884); (1) journal/sketchbook, 123 pages, bonded leather with embossed name and date on closure "Helen L. Searle 1858", inscription on interior cover "Helen Searle at Bryan's Seminary/Batavia NY", containing 27 pencil sketches including still life, landscapes, flowers, animals, boats, watercolor of American flag, important account of paintings completed, list of those completed and sold and to whom headed "Pictures painted after Dec. 1st 1862", prose, newspaper clippings dated 1880-1882 with reviews of James W. Pattison and 1866-1867, with reviews for Helen Searle and exhibition paintings for the National Academy of Design, 7-1/4 x 6-1/2 in., [toning at edges of paper, journal with wear and split at closure]; (2) sketchbook, 78 pages, embossed and gilded leather with "Album" on cover, inscription on interior page "Helen L. Searle/from/W.A.R./Christmas 1865", containing a collection of works by artists, some signed "M.V.B.", "W.M. Resy", "H. Veltman", including nine pencil or ink sketches including one fine still life sketch by Helen Searle after Preyer, three watercolors, prose, three prints, 8-1/2 x 7 in., [front cover off but present, wear to binding, light toning and handling grime at edges]; (3) journal, 47 pages, embossed leather, titled in gilt "Poesie", 19 works by or attributed to Emile Vernier, "J.S.F.", Luigi Chialiva, William M. Chase, H. Veltman, M. Wolf, "AT" and includes eleven pencil, five ink, one crayon and two watercolor sketches, 9-3/4 x 6-3/4 in., [journal with wear, torn spine, mildew stains inside covers, paper with toning, light foxing]; (4) sketchbook, 40 pages, cloth cover with gilt "Album", inscribed on interior "Helen Searle/Dusseldorf 1868", contains 33 pencil sketches by Helen Searle of leaves, persimmons, grapes, trees, raspberries, flowers, stone seat, portraits, landscapes, seven sketches of young girl in a landscape possibly by James William Pattison (or both artists), two of which are signed "J.W.P" (40 sketches total), 8-5/8 x 12-1/4 in., [sketchbook with broken spine with losses, pages with wear to edges, toning, some foxing]; (5) cloth sketchbook, 38 pages, inscribed "10.7.68/Leadenhall St. London" on interior of one cover and "Helen Searle, Alexander 26, Dusseldorf" on other, bears dates from 1868-1874, contains 20 pencil sketches of sights in European cities, caricatures of Johann Wilhelm Preyer (her teacher), sketches after DeHeem and other still lifes, 4-1/2 x 6-1/8 in., [stains to cover, grime, wear, moderate toning to page edges]; (6) travel diary, 67 pages, details travels from London throughout England, Scotland, Holland and back to Dusseldorf, with notes of museum and cathedral visits and the Franco-Prussian War, entries dating from April 8, 1871 to June 27, 1878, 6-3/4 x 4-3/8 in., [broken spine, wear to cover, pages with staining, holes, toning, wear to edges]; (7) cloth sketchbook, 38 pages, inscribed on interior of front cover "Helen Searle/26 Alexander Strasse/Dusseldorf", contains 32 pencil sketches of architectural views, Rhine River, grape leaves, 4-1/2 x 6-1/8 in., [stains, grime, wear, moderate toning to page edges]; (8) with lithograph after portrait of Johann Wilhelm Preyer, Helen's teacher at Malkosen Artist Association in Dusseldorf, page 12-3/4 x 9-3/4 in., [pencil inscriptions at bottom, creases, grime, foxing, handling grime, corner loss lower right], (total 8 items); approximately 150 works total, detailed listing available.
