A skilful composition with reference to the tradition of Dutch still life painting
The present still life was painted by a Dutch painter and dates to the period of the early 19th century. The composition depicts different pieces of fish in a clay pot, combined with cooking utensils and some crabs and seashells on a wooden base. The work refers to the tradition of classical Dutch still life painting, which is strongly characterized by the skillful use of light and shadows. Due to the objects presented here the painting belongs to the so-called ‘kitchen paintings’.
The painting is in good condition considering its age. The canvas is relined and the edges are covered with a narrow strip of paper. The varnish is uneven and the paint surface shows clear craquelure as well as light scratches at the lower edge. There are also some scattered marks with tiny material losses, where the frame has rubbed. The wooden frame shows traces of age and use. The framed work measures 61 x 76 cm and the size of the stretcher is 48.5 x 69 cm.
