This typical coastal view by Louis Gabriel Eugène Isabey (1804-1886) features a loose impasto brushwork. It depicts the quay wall of a most likely French port city in earthy color shades, set
under a dramatic sky, which indicates a thunderstorm. Some boats have moored to the quay, including a loaded tugboat with several passengers in the foreground. While the front parts of the painting merge shapeless into each other, the house of the village behind the quay wall are accentuated clearly with black lines. In this painting, Isabey aimed for the exploration of light, as indicates the water surface in the front.
The painting is signed with ‘E Isabey’ (partly repainted) lower right. It is mounted in a gilt and patinated wooden frame. It is overall in good condition. The canvas has been relined, and the color surface shows some craquelure and tiny spots due to age. Inspection under UV light reveals small, accentuating areas of retouching in the foreground, as well as larger touch-ups in the sky. The frame is in very good condition, showing minor wear. The image dimensions are 40 x 60 cm, and the frame measures 57 x 76.5 cm.
