View of Venice with the Ponte dei Tre Archi
This large-scale painting is based on famous works by Venetian veduta painters, above all on Francesco Guardi’s ‘View on the Canneregio Canal, Venice’ from around 1775-1780. The painting on hand also shows the Canale di Canneregio. The Ponte dei Tre Archi is spanning the canal, once the main entrance to the center of Venice. The bridge was constructed by Italian architect Andrea Tirali and has been popular motif for many veduta artists ever since. In the waters of the canal are also pictured various characteristic Venetian gondolas.
The painting shows heavy sings of age and wear. The varnished surface displays craquelure as well as flaking and cracks at various places, which mostly have been backed with numerous patches on the reverse. The chipped off parts along the edges have been touched up. The dimensions of the canvas are 95 x 126.5 cm. (nlu)
