The drawing presented here, executed in watercolor technique, was created by the Austrian painter Jakob Alt. Shown is a typical landscape with historical architecture backdrop. A painter is sitting aside a forest road in front of his scaffold, depicting is the magnificent castle in front of him. The watercolor by Jakob Alt is characterized by a very fine and detailed painting.

The work is signed lower left ‘J. Alt’ and is in overall good condition. The sheet is slightly curled due to the technique. Occasionally tiny foxing in the area of the sky and light abrasions in the right margin, otherwise of good impression. The sheet size is 40.4 x 57.4 cm, the framed dimensions are 43 x 59.5 cm.

Jakob Alt (1789-1872)

Jakob Alt was born 1789 in Frankfurt am Main. He received his first training with the portrait and miniature painter J.P. Beer. In 1811 he continued his studies in Vienna and focused on the training of landscape painting. He went on study trips through the Alps and the Danube area as well as Northern Italy and Rome. His works are characterized by a particular realistic style. In addition, Jakob Alt was commissioned to paint watercolors on behalf of the Emperor Ferdinand. His sons Franz and Rudolf also successfully worked as painters and lithographers.
