The dream vision of Jacob is a well-known story from the Old Testament

The present oil painting is the work of an artist, presumably active in Italy during the first half of the 16th century. The depiction is based on a biblical story from the Genesis, in which Jacob’s ladder is described (see Gen 28, 12): Jacob, who was fleeing from his brother Esau from Beersheba to Harran, fell asleep and dreamt about a staircase, stretching from the earth to heaven and crowded by angels of God. At the upper end God himself spoke to Jacob, revealing his central proclamation.



The canvas of the painting is laid down on a panel. There are a number of horizontal tension cracks throughout. The paint surface shows some areas of abrasion, especially affecting the figures. There are also some marks with small losses of paint, where the frame has rubbed. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of retouching in the background as well as in the figurative parts. The wooden frame is gilded and shows clear traces of age and use. The framed work measures 85 x 135.5 cm and the size of the panel is 76 x 126.5 cm. (cbo)
