Description
After Hiram Powers (north American, 1805 - 1873), A Continental sculpted limestone model of a Greek Slave Girl, 20th century, portrayed nude and standing chained next to a rock, 150cm high The Greek Slave is a marble statue that Powers originally sculpted in clay whilst working in Florence . The sculpture was completed in 1844 and now resides in Raby Castle, England. Copies of the statue were displayed in a number of venues around Great Britain and the United States, and it quickly became one of Powers' most famous and popular works. The design of the statue was based upon the Venus de' Medici, held at the Ufizzi, which Powers would have studied during his Italian sojourn. The model offered here differs in some ways as the sculptor has reinterpreted the original, particularly in the treatment of the hair, but is essentially true to Powers' original work
