Atmospheric landscape with a view of the mountain Rax – one of Karl Ludwig Prinz’s most popular motifs; paintings by the artist fetch up to €8,000 on the international auction market

This painting by Karl Ludwig Prinz depicts one of the artist’s most popular motifs. In several of his works the Austrian painter represented the Rax mountain range. In the present work, the viewer looks over a snow-covered clearing with a couple of houses, peacefully lying in the shadows. Tall conifers frame the idyllic scenery left and right. The imposing mountain range, which is illuminated by the first rays of the rising sun, thrones in the background. The steep mountain wall of the Rax is rendered in soft shades of pink and gray with broad strokes. Impasto paint accentuations as well as individual incised lines give the serene landscape composition a harmonious depth.

The painting is in very good condition. It is signed lower left ‘KARL LUDWIG PRINZ’. The frame shows some wear. The framed work measures 77 x 102 cm, the wood panel measures 65 x 90 cm.
