Description
Great Britain, c. 1880
David Payne (1843–1894) – Scottish Landscape painter
Signed on the lower left and inscribed on the reverse ‘David Payne’
Idyllic landscape in light colors
Wooden frame with velvet lined borders
Canvas dimensions: 20.5 x 23.3 cm
Good condition
This idyllic landscape was realized by the Scottish landscape painter David Payne in the second half of the 19th century. In gentle colors it shows a forked path next to which a woman and a girl have erected a tent. Presumably Payne is showing a gypsy camp here, a topic he often employed in his paintings. A man in a brown suit is passing them by.
The painting is signed on the lower left and inscribed on the reverse of the canvas ‘David Payne’. Under UV light some touch-ups are visible in the clouds and the upper right corner. A minimal color abrasion can be found there as well. The frame is in good condition with only slight signs of wear. The canvas dimensions are 20.5 x 23.3 cm, while the frame measures 39 x 42 cm.
