(W.H.J., illuminator )], "W.H.James". The Bruce's Heart , illuminated title, frontispiece and 4 leaves of text, written in black ink with watercolours and highlighted with gold, text within decorative borders incorporating vignettes of the dying Bruce, ships at sea, battlefields etc., on rectos only on thick card, frontispiece signed and dated "W.H.James 1877"at foot, lightly browned, each leaf mounted on cloth stub with protective leaf, modern blue morocco, upper cover with inlaid saltire in blue and white calf, spine gilt, dust-jacket, cloth slip-case, 4to, 1877. Relating the story concerning the heart of Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland. On his death the Bruce's body was buried in Dunfermline Abbey but, as he had requested, Sir James Douglas took the heart with him on a crusade to the Holy Land. Douglas only got as far as Spain where he was killed in battle. The casket containing the embalmed heart was discovered on the battlefield and brought back to Scotland where it was buried in Melrose Abbey.
