being the Adventures of Ensign Blobbs "of Ours", first and ?only edition , lithographed throughout with pictorial title and 20 plates, all but one with multiple images, artist's name supplied in manuscript at foot of title, some light soiling and staining, a few plates torn and repaired, mostly marginal but affecting some images, with presentation inscription "Elphinstone Begbie from the Author June 1865 Madras" cut and mounted on front free endpaper, later half red morocco, spine gilt, t.e.g., a little worn, spine defective at head, oblong folio, Madras, G.Winchester, [1865]. Rare suite of humorous sketches concerning a young man's experiences in India from his arrival in Madras to his welcome return to England, courtesy of an inheritance from "a distant & rich relative". His trials and travails include encounters with mosquitoes, servants, train travel and other transport, the heat and appearing in drag in amateur dramatics, along with scenes of the People's Park, a concert, the races and other society events. We can find no copy having appeared at auction and only 3 copies are listed on COPAC (V & A, BL and the National Library of Scotland).
