Hispano-Philippine Male Santos
19th century, Batanes Province, the kneeling figure carved with his hands clasped together in prayer, raised above swirling clouds and a drum-from base, one eye with glass insert, covered in traces of gesso and polychrome enamels. 15 1/2"H.
Condition: lacking one eye, lacking head element, wear to finger tips, loss to rosary, wear to painted surface, loss to nose. Provenance: The Mr. & Mrs. Lester Andelson Collection Exhibition: The Allen Memorial Art Museum, Oberlin College, February 9, 1981. Literature: Philippine Religious Imagery, Fernando Zobel de Ayala, 1963.
