Hispano-Philippine Female Santos
Bulan, Sorsogon Province, Philippines, early 19th century, carved from one piece of hardwood with long cascading hair, flowing robes, and a crescent form base carved with acanthus leaves, covered in traces of gesso, brown, white, black, and green enamel. 11"H.
Condition: crack to face, lacking both hands, burn mark to body, large crack to base. Provenance: The Mr. & Mrs. Lester Andelson Collection Exhibition: The Allen Memorial Art Museum, Oberlin College, February 9, 1981. Literature: Philippine Religious Imagery, Fernando Zobel de Ayala, 1963
