Hispano-Philippine Virgin Figure
19th century, Batanes Province, carved from hard wood as the Virgin Mary with long flowing robes, accompanied by a kneeling angel holding a basket, raised over a prone snarling beast and clouds, covered in traces of gesso and polychrome enamels, including crimson. 18"H.
Condition: lacking one arm, losses to fingers, angel lacking one arm, Virgin lacking head ornament, losses to painted surface, loss to rear underside of base, crack to recto. Provenance: The Mr. & Mrs. Lester Andelson Collection Exhibition: The Allen Memorial Art Museum, Oberlin College, February 9, 1981.
