Item Details
Description
This is referred to in Robert Ball's book on the Springfield Armory as the "Type 2" manufactured with iron round pan circa 1804 to 1809. This particular musket has the 1805 Springfield dated lock with the cursive "U.S." and eagle. The barrel is stamped with the proof "P" along with "J. Norton". Standard features include a 44-1/2" barrel with bayonet lug and chambered for the .69 caliber buck and ball. Original flintlock ignition (no flint). Sling swivel on trigger guard, as well as the middle barrel band. No visible cartouche on stock. All metal surface are a smooth pleasing brown metal patina. The wood is original, shows all the original finish, and has the usual battle impressions. Fine working order. Has an original bayonet with a "W" proof mark and original ramrod. This was the standard U.S. military issue introduced immediately after the American Revolution and was the type of musket used when America went to war with the British in the War of 1812. It is a smooth bore. Bore itself is very good with some of the typical abrasions usually found in arms of this era. It is a fine example of an early U.S. Martial musket that warrants no apologies.
