19th century AD or earlier. A page from a manuscript of the Shanameh with calligraphic text in columns within a block surrounded on three sides by scrolled foliage; the block illustrated with figural scenes from the poem in vivid colours; mounted in a modern glazed frame. The Shahnameh (The Book of Kings) is the longest epic poem written by a single poet, the Persian scholar Ferdowsi, between circa 977 and 1010 AD. It is the national epic of Greater Iran, composed in 60,000 verses. It tells mainly the mythical and early historical past of the Persian Empire from the creation of the world up to the Islamic conquest of Persia in the 7th century AD. 740 grams, 35 x 27cm including frame (13 3/4 x 10 1/2").
