Description
13th-14th century AD. A bronze vesica flat seal with raised rib and suspension loop to reverse; with intaglio design of a wyvern in profile; with incuse +S' RICARD'.DE LEKCHE inscription for Richard of Lekche; with collector record cards, museum quality impression and ticket. See Bloom, J. Harvey, English Seals, London, 1906, for general information. Recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme, reference IHS-A7DFD5, accompanied by a copy of the PAS report. The old word 'lekche' may refer to 'a wet place' (as OE 'lecc') rather than to a specific community; the wyvern is a legendary creature, winged and with a dragon's head but having only two legs and appears often in heraldry, especially as a crest. 9.17 grams, 31.16mm long (1 1/4"). An important London collection of ecclesiastical seals, acquired since the 1970s; found Colchester, Essex, UK, 2002.
