the strong figure with an expression of great sadness in the image of Mater Dolorosa, the shrouded figure with hands clutched and standing on a rocky base. Hardwood. Bantayan Island, Cebu Province. 21 1/4" h.
Condition: traces of paint, possibly lacking element to hood, crack on back of figure, possible loss to base at front. Provenance: The Mr. & Mrs. Lester Andelson Collection Exhibition: The Allen Memorial Art Museum, Oberlin College, February 9, 1981 Literature: Philippine Religious Imagery, Fernando Zobel de Ayala, 1963"
