Steve Kaufman (1960-2010)

Steve Kaufman was born in the Bronx, New York. Already at the age of 12, he made so-called Pet Rocks (pebbles painted with faces and marketed as ‘pets’) for the New York department store Macy's. From 1978 to 1981 he studied at the School of Visual Arts, where Kaufman met Andy Warhol, for whom he worked as an assistant in the Factory later. After Warhol's death Kaufman worked in his own studio in Los Angeles and created portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Muhammad Ali, Elvis, Madonna, Celine Dion and many others. His works are hold in major museums as well as in private collections. (fea)
