Provenance: Ex-collection Arthur Warren Johnson (Dow's first biographer and author of "Arthur Wesley Dow, Historian - Artist - Teacher," 1934), from Minnie Dow. Between 1893 and 1900, Dow was experimenting with flattened forms, synthesized colors, and asymmetrical compositions inspired by Japanese woodblock prints, but he also continued to paint less exotic interiors, landscapes, and coastal scenes. The present painting compares most readily with the more conservative works of the 1893-1900 period, and probably falls somewhere around 1900.
