Bronze buffalo sculpture with fine detail by Henry Shrady mounted on a black marble base. Shrady was neither a western nor naturalist sculptor. Nevertheless, according to Patricia Broder, writing in Bronzes of the American West, Shrady created "some of the finest bronze sculptures of American Western wildlife." A law graduate from Columbia University, Shrady had no formal art education but enjoyed drawing animals at the Bronx Zoo, from pet shop windows and painting portraits of family pets. A representative of the Gorham Company saw a photograph of one of Shrady's modeled works which led to the casting of his first bronze. Working in the tradition of the 19th century French animaliers, Shrady's animal sculptures were naturalistic, well-modeled representations of his subjects.
