FINE OHIO SAMPLER. This sampler is being sold to benefit the Hospice of Marin - San Rafael, California. Colorful silk thread on linen with rows of alphabets, a floral border including pink carnations, birds, bowls of fruit and below two buildings on green grass with trees. "Ann Alletta Schenck Franklin Ohio, CVB Schencks School 1818". Sue Studebaker's book, Ohio Is My Dwelling Place, shows samplers from this school and notes that there are nine documented examples. According to her research, Franklin was founded in 1796 by William Cortenus Schenck and was located just south of Dayton. CVB Schenck was his sister, Catherine Van Brough Schenck, who had taught needlework at the Huntington Academy in Long Island before opening a school in Franklin around 1817-1818. The church in the lower right is found on all samplers from this school though the building on the left that appears unfinished is more elaborate than the other buildings usually depicted. Ann was probably a niece or other relative of Catherine's. See Ohio Is My Dwelling Place by Sue Studebaker, pages 47-50, for more information. Unframed, but in exceptional condition with a few minor stains. 15 1/2" x 15 1/2".
