RARE ORIGINAL 1887 Allen & Ginter Lithographic Poster 1887 Allen & Ginter Color Chromolithographic Poster of Championships - 1 of 6 known to exist. Once in a while on the auction circuit, an item comes along that is so truly rare that it's nearly impossible to attach a value to it. That's the case with this 1887 Allen & Ginter World Champions chromolithographic poster. This amazing 16" x 28" poster was originally produced to promote cards sales and was designed for display in tobacco stores. Featured are cards of sports champions like boxers, rowers, wrestlers, billiard players, marksmen and, of course, baseball players. Top athletes featured include: Adrian C. Anson, Charles Comiskey, Chas. W. McAuliffe, John L. Sullivan, and marksmen like Hon. W.F. Cody (Buffalo Bill) and Annie Oakley. The poster is considerably rarer than the tobacco cards that were inserted into the packs of cigarettes that it promotes, and according to the Smithsonian Baseball book by Stephen Wong that came out in 2005, this poster is one of only six of its kind known to exist. To top it off, it arrives in an elegant vintage frame with gold detailing, making the total piece 23" x 35" and all ready to hang in your office or museum. Some minor wear is apparent along the top of the poster where it was originally matted over and a 1" tear exists midway up the right side, along with a light, 2.5" white line located six inches from the bottom near the middle; but the piece remains in amazing condition for its age, with most of the minor defects easily hidden if it were re-matted. Frame is not vintage.
