Typed Letter Signed "Lyndon B. Johnson"

LYNDON BAINES JOHNSON, 36th President of the United States and Congressman.
December 9, 1958, Typed Letter Signed, "Lyndon B. Johnson," 1 page, 10.5" x 8," on United States Senate stationery, Choice Extremely Fine. This letter was written to a constituent, Mr. William Bond, who had sent a copy of the Texas Farm Bureau newspaper to Johnson. It reads in part:

"... I am glad you have written to me, because there has been a great deal of misinformation about what happened to the various court bills which came before the Senate during the last week of the session .... I should say, in addition, that I did not vote "against" the States Rights Bill. We never at any time had the opportunity to vote on this legislation on the basis of its merits. The vote was on whether or not to recommit - that is, to send the whole issue back to Senator Eastland's Judiciary Committee. I voted to salvage an impossible situation ..."

This letter is written while Johnson was a U.S. Senator from Texas and shows his willingness to address his voters about personal concerns that they may have. In lovely condition, usual folds, trivial staple holes at the upper left, overall a very nice letter, which is housed in a custom-made hard cover "book binding" with gilt lettering.

William A. Bond was a big game hunter who lived in Vernon, Texas. The Red River Valley Museum now houses his collection. In 1958 he may have had some connection to the Texas Farm Bureau newspaper.
