Scrimshawed 1782 Revolutionary War Dated Powder Horn
1782, Revolutionary War Dated, Powder Horn, with Ornate Scrimshaw, titled "M. L. - 1782," Choice Very Fine.
This is an original and fully authentic Revolutionary War Dated Powder Horn which measures 9" long. The wide end, being about half its total size, is ornately scrimshawed with considerable skill and using highly creative designs. There is light, definite wear, with a fine, hard to see, 4" hairline crack to the tapered small end on the underside, attesting to the originality of this horn. The natural tone and patina remains untouched. It is titled, "M. L. - 1782". Some of the Folk Art style scrimshaw work includes; a large tree or plant on a short table, with a large bird (perhaps a parrot) being perched on its top branch; a banner or box above the bird with "W T" within; another plant or tree has yet another bird at its upper center; there are a number of smaller fern-like plants along the base. The nipple end is in very smooth, clean condition, the wooden cap having numerous small pencil point sized shallow holes, likely created from previously attached strap holders. A nice, attractive original scrimshawed Revolutionary War dated Powder Horn that would be a fine piece in any collection.
