Item Details
Description
A CIRCA-1895 RIDER-ERICSSON 6" DIAMETER HOT AIR PUMPING ENGINE. Details include a single vertical cylinder of 6" diameter bore, with a 6" diameter power piston and secondary displacer piston within the same cylinder. This early Ericsson engine incorporates brass linkage and twin main beam bearings each with brass oil cup. Engine details include: a 25" long heavy cast walking beam with twin brass drop rods to power piston, 1 1/4" diameter beam crankshaft, brass grasshopper linkage to heavy cast pivoting external cylinder displacer yoke, the yoke with linkage to top-mounted displacer rod that passes through a common power piston adjustable packing gland.
Other details include a water-jacketed cylinder with brass cylinder drain valve, cylinder side-mounted shallow-well pump section with adjustable packing gland and 2 1/2" diameter pump casing with intake piping and drain valve, the pump flange mounted with delivery ports to water jacket, the jacket with output piping. Other fine details include a 26 1/2" diameter heavy cast flywheel with a 2 1/2" face, the flywheel with six curvilinear spokes all intact without sign of repair, the 1" diameter crankshaft with frame-incorporated main crankshaft bearing complete with twin oil ports and a 5" long crank arm and crank pin, the engine appears to be complete and is in running order with only the brass builder's plate not present (Note: replicated Ericsson maker's plates are available). The cylinder flywheel and pump assembly mounted on a 28" x 11 1/2" heavy cast brass plate with maker's name in raised letters reading: "Rider-Ericsson Engine Co., New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and Boston." The base plate supported by a pair of ornate heavy cast A-frame design legs each leg section with provision for bolt attachment to skid base. (Note: the legs, typically often repaired or broken, appear to be in perfect condition.) The cast iron firebox suspended by four rods below base plate with upper and lower section with hinged fire door (appears to be a replacement door), the firebox upper and lower section appear to be in excellent condition with internal 3/4" diameter bar-type grates for coal and wood use, homemade tin removable ash pan, cast 5" oval chimney receiver with 48" long section of black stove pipe with top hat chimney cover and adjustable damper.
This engine is in operating condition only in need of a thorough cleaning, otherwise ready to display and/or pump water. The engine proper all mounted on a contemporary wood skid base 52" x 32" with oak cross supports and heavy 6" diameter by 2" iron casters. Dimensions: overall height of skids - 10"; overall height of engine on skids to top of flywheel - 64"; overall height of engine on skids to top of bedplate - 34"; overall height of engine to walking beam oilers - 60"; overall height to top of stack - 87". Approximate weight - 1,000 lbs. (See photos).
