Description
A FINE CIRCA-1860s AMERICAN BOX BED 2-HP HORIZONTAL STEAM ENGINE This interesting and early New England engine, fresh from a Maine barn and not cleaned or polished in any way, was located several decades ago in the Uxbridge, MA. Crown & Eagle factory, then located on the Blackstone River. During renovation, the engine was discovered behind a factory partition wall, possibly having been used to power small factory machinery. With a single horizontal wood lag cylinder of approximately 2 1/4" bore x 6 1/2" stroke, with a cylinder side-mounted valve chest, with internal vertical ports, with a resting D-valve, adjustable packing glands, bar-type crosshead guides, brass crosshead shoes, double-tapered steel connecting rod with wedged, keyed and strapped large and small ends, ornate brass crankshaft, eccentric strap with linkage to valve rod. Other details include twin adjustable brass main bearings, a single 27" diameter donut-rim flywheel with four highly ornate dog-tail spokes, single 12" diameter belt pulley with a 2" face, the pulley with six curvilinear spokes, the outboard bearings supported on a cast A-frame, the engine supported on a box bed girder frame with tin heavy cast ornate tapered and turned pedestal supports, all mounted on a finely crafted pine base supported on four turned and tapered 5" tall wood columns, all on a heavy pine 48" x 12 1/2" sub-base with stepped molding. Dimensions: overall length of upper base – 45"; width – 13"; lower base – 45"; width – 12 1/2"; overall height to top of flywheel – 30"; overall length of engine – 42"; overall width – 19".
