Description
A MUSEUM EXHIBITION GRADE PERIOD MODEL OF AN 1837 ENGLISH STEAM TABLE ENGINE. This exquisite model was acquired for a prominent American museum collection in 1965 and on display for the past 35 years. The engine had its wood exhibition plinth added with provision for internal electric motor drive activated by a multi-position timer button. Though designed to run on steam or air, the engine turns over at approximately 50 RPMs when driven by round-belt from its internal electric motor. The electric operation has a push-button 20-second timer and separate switch for choosing timer, on or off.
This model incorporates extremely fine appointments including a single cylinder ornate inverted table-mounted cylinder of approximately 1 1/4" diameter bore x 2 1/2" stroke with a cylinder-side-mounted valve chest with cross-beam and twin drop links to a table-mounted cross-shaft with main bearings each with removable caps, the bearings supported on twin turned pillars. Other steam chest features include a finely knurled adjustable packing gland and intake piping. Other fine details include overhead twin Gothic design crosshead guides, crosshead shaft with twin rollers, double tapered and turned connecting rods each with wedged and strapped ends, to under-table mounted crankshaft. The cylinder entablature with ornate cast corner molding is supported on four turned and tapered columns, with 5 1/4" x 5 1/4" cast sub-base. Other appointments include exquisitely executed 8" diameter spoked donut-rim flywheel with integral groove around belt drive take-off, hand lever with ornate turned handle and catch for disengagement of valve-shaft, the crankshaft of polished steel with twin cross-frame-incorporated main bearings each with removable adjustable caps and oil port provision. All mounted on a 5 1/4" x 5 3/4" x 2" cherry wood sub-base supported on an 11 3/4" x 11 3/4" x 5" custom mahogany museum display plinth with internal electric motor and controls including external base-mounted timer button and multi-selection toggle switch. This model will also run on steam or air. The engine with original 3" x 2" brass maker's plaque engraved: "This Model Represents the First Table Engine Built by Bond, Turner & Hurwood and Used in Their St. Peter's Works, Foundry Lane, Ipswich, 1837."
Dimensions: overall height including base - 20"; length over shaft - 8"; height of engine with original base - 15". Estimated weight - 25 lbs. Note: The successful bidder will be provided with written documentation regarding the provenance and prior museum ownership of this fine engine. (See photo).
