Item Details
Description
A RARE AND MOST INTERESTING EARLY CIRCA-1910 PROTOTYPE TWIN CYLINDER VERTICAL DIESEL ENGINE believed to have been built in Germany as a prototype, unsigned, or as used for an educational or laboratory model. Details include twin cylinders each of approximately 2 1/2" diameter bore x 4" stroke, each cylinder jacketed with detailed cylinder head, brass and copper manifolds, water jacket cooling, fine execution of fasteners, cylinder head nuts, overhead brass priming cups, twin exhaust stacks, cylinder assembly with integral horizontal gear-driven shaft assembly driven by vertical side shaft from crankshaft with twin intake and twin exhaust cams, tapered stanchions supporting intake and exhaust rocker arms to spring-loaded valves in what appears to be injection pumps, the side shaft with four main bearings, each with adjustable removable cap, each rocker arm including injector flange with adjustable clearance. Other fine details include a vertical 1/2" diameter crankshaft gear-driven side shaft with lower and upper oil boxes, 2" diameter beveled gear meshing with 2" diameter horizontal valve gear shaft, 1" diameter crankshaft with 2" diameter beveled gear drive to vertical side shaft, twin 5" diameter end plates with a single 12 1/2" diameter flywheel with eight spokes and integral 3 1/2" x 1 3/4" crowned pulley, the main crankcase with four 3 1/4" diameter access plates, all mounted on a 10 1/2" x 11 1/2" x 3" custom-built presentation plinth, the engine in original unpainted aged patina with original red paint on spokes, not polished nor cleaned in any way.
This engine was run approximately 10 years ago with traces of carbon in exhaust pipes. This engine is out of a prominent American collection. It is rare to see a small diesel of this size and quality. The engine appears to be in very fine condition with excellent compression, free-turning and the only noticeable needed repair is a 3/8" deflection of the flywheel indicating that the protruding crankshaft most likely has been deflected during transport over the years and the flywheel jarred producing a slight bend in the protruding section. It is not believed that the internal crankshaft requires repair. We will not attempt to repair the wobble in the flywheel and leave that up to the next owner. Final details include roller bearings on rocker arms for cam-driven motion, matching fasteners, extended height cylinder head bulbs and many other fine details. Dimensions: overall height to top of exhaust stack - 26"; to top of rocker arms - 23"; overall width - 12"; overall width from exhaust stack to rocker camshaft section - 8"; overall length over shaft and pulley - 16"; weight - 115 lbs.
