Ford manufactured this motor to compete in NASCAR against the Hemis from Chrysler and Richard Pettys Racing skills behind the Hemi power. After Rule changes and the Chrysler Boycott in 1965, Ford had hoped to continue to conquer the track as they did in 1965, and hoped to Introduce their SOHC 427 Hemi motor- this Ford Hemi motor was rejected by NASCAR in 1966 as they felt it had failed to prove it was a high volume item, such as the Chrysler hemi. After the rejection from NASCAR Ford released these motors mainly to Drag Racers, such as made famous in Connie Kalittas's Bounty Hunter Dragster, and various Boat Racers. Ford pulled out of NASCAR for that year and the Chrysler Hemis were back walking all over the competition. Ford realized that they needed to push their products with the NASCAR audience and in 1967 Ford was back with its refined tunnel-port 427 engine and was also put into production cars and ran at Daytona. There is no accurate record as to how many of these original prodection Ford 427 SOHC, or known as "Cammer", motors Ford Manufactured and released into the general public. I have heard of numbers from 500-800 made. One fact that remains is this is an extreme display of horsepower and rare find. These truely are coveted and are a great addition to any collection or NASCAR fan.
