Issued as Volumes 5 through 8 of Francis Blagdon's "Modern Discoveries". Peter Pallas, 1741-1811, a native of Berlin, was invited to St. Petersburg by the Empress Catherine as an eminent naturalist, and spent six years, 1768-1774, exploring the Urals, the Kirghiz Steppes, the Altai Range, part of Siberia, and the steppes of the Volga, returning with an extraordinary treasure of specimens; he eventually settled in the Crimea, and produced several significant works on the geography, ethnography, flora and fauna of the regions visited.
