Studio of Francesco Solimena oil painting on

canvas likely depicting Cardinal Giulio de' Medici, made Cardinal under the papacy of Leo X, September 28, 1513; ultimately to be elected as pope Clement VII, November 18, 1523. Solimena (1657-1747), his active studio came to dominate Neapolitan painting from the 1690's through the first four decades of the 18th C. and was at the heart of cultural life in Naples. Among his pupils were Francesco de Mura (1696-1784), Giuseppe Bonito (1707-1789) and most notably Corrado Giaquinto (1703-1765) and Sebastiano Conca (1680-1764). Solimena was known for constructing complex allegories fully employing his mastery of chiaroscuro. 88" H x 180" W, Circa - First quarter 18th C.
