OF WASHINGTON. John Marshall, Life of Washington, Commander in Chief of the American Forces, During the War which Established the Independence of His Country, and First President of the United States, 5 vols., Philadelphia: C.P. Wayne, 1804-7, 8vo, first edition. Bound in contemporary calf with gilt-stamped spines. Howes M317, Sabin 44788. Bindings somewhat worn, generally good. An important work by the first Chief Justice, Marshall's Life of Washington is generally considered a classic American historical text. Sabin indicates that the later American editions did not include the first volume, which contains an historical sketch of the American colonial period.
