Classical caved sofa in blue upholstery
Description
Classical mahogany carved sofa with serpentine back outlined in rounded molding with assymetrical carved pierced crest. Scroll shaped arms projecting from back. Curved arm rails above flat fronted supports embellished with applied scrolling leaf design. Serpentine, bow-front seat upholstered over springs. Conforming front skirt carved with leaf and scroll designs, with floral-carved block design above leaf-carved, scroll feet. Sofa also has an ivory slipcover with blue piping. Provenance - this is believed to be the "carved rosewood sofa" that originally came from Traveller's Rest referenced in Susan and Conn Harris West's notes (although it is not rosewood). Conn West noted that the sofa was given to her parents when they married in 1903 by her mother's mother, Mary McConnell Overton Thompson. Mrs. West noted that she remembered it in her parents' sitting room of their house at 2111 Hayes Street. Records from Traveller's Rest were not able to be found to support Susan West's claim that it once was used at that site. Condition - overall very good condition with repair to hand rest on the sofa's left front side, small repair to carved crest and back foot. Dimensions - 86" width x 35" height x 27" depth. Glen Leven estate.
