Rosewood bed with arched paneled headboard having applied carved cartouche and four large squared posts. Posts have mid-molding and end in block feet with gadrooned molding. Carved scrolled sections adorn the four corners where posts join rails. Accommodates a mattress larger than typical queen size but smaller than king size; approximately 64 by 75in. Wood appears to be rosewood, or grained walnut to simulate rosewood. A local Tennessee bed of similar form was found to have a signature of a Columbia, TN maker. Provenance - Susan West's notes refer in two places to a "four post bed," with one set of notes stating the bed came from Glen Leven and another stating that it descended in the Wilson-Harris family. Condition - old refinished condition with minor scratching, moderate wear to rails, one side slightly sunbleached particularly on rails. One post missing a section of mid-molding across half of one side. Screws atop posts indicate the bed had a canopy at one time. Dimensions - 96" height x 82" length x 71" width. Circa 1850. Glen Leven estate.
