Two Walworth Stilson paintings including a large gouache on paperboard and a smaller oil on paperboard. Litchfield County, Connecticut artist, Walworth Stilson (1874-1962) attended the Detroit School of Art, studying under listed artist, John Ward Dunsmore. He completed his art studies at the Detroit Academy, where listed artist Joseph W. Gies was his instructor. His art career started in New York City at the "Illustrated American". He also illustrated for St. Nicholas Magazine and the Metropolitan Magazine of New York. Books illustrated by Stilson include "Our Fern and Their Haunts" and "The Writers of Knickerbocker New York". 1st item - landscape, gouache on paperboard, view from forest interior with birch trees with meadow clearing in the background, signed lower left corner, "Wm W. Stilson". Signed on back at upper margin, "W. Stilson ucd 2-7-04 3". Condition – light layer of dirt and foxing to unpainted margins, paperboard margin corners worn and chipped, stain to upper right edge of unpainted paperboard margin. 14 ¾" x 21 ¼" gouache painting, 22" x 31" paperboard. Circa 1904. 2nd item - Oil on paperboard, signed lower right, 'Walworth Stilson'. Depicting a house surrounded by trees, surrounded by meadow. Inscription in pencil in lower right margin partially legible, ".....elms when the day was high." Dimensions 8 ¼" x 12 5/8". Abrasion in spots to sky area. Does not appear to be paint loss. Circa 1900.
