Robert Laessig Floral Still Life on Paper,
mixed media, signed in the lower left and dated 1959. Depicts a dried floral arrangment, typical of Laessig's work of this period. Appears to be in its original mat and frame; 35.5" x 21.5" (image), 41.25" x 27.25" (w/frame). Robert Laessig was born in West New York, New Jersey in 1913. He attended art school in Germany and studied with the Art Students League in New York City. During World War II, he was a combat artist with the 13th Air Force in the Pacific. Laessig moved to northern Ohio in 1950 when he accepted a senior art consultant post with the American Greeting Card Company. He retired from that position twenty years later to devote his energies to a fine art career. Laessig is a member of the National Academy of Design, the American Watercolor Society and the Ohio Water Color Society. His works have won many coveted awards including Butler Institute's Best Floral Painting, the Audubon Artist Medal, National Academy of Design Prize, the American Watercolor Society National Award and the Watercolor U.S.A. Award. He was selected to design four Presidential Christmas cards during the Johnson years at the White House as well as several for the State of Ohio including the 1988 Ohio-Governor Celeste greeting.
