Eugene von Blass (Austrian, 1843-1931), Urchins,
pair of oil on panel studies, both boldly signed upper left "Eugen von Blass", the first of an underage wharf rat contemplating what is likely his millionth cigarette, the second captures a pensive flower girl with a tray of violets. Thepaintings are unframed. Eugen von Blass, a son of noted painter Karl von Blass, studied under his father before attending the Academy of Rome and the Academy of Venice. The younger von Blass became adept at figural painting and made a career depicting the street people of Venice. His charming and often sensual works won a following and were exhibited at the Royal Academy. Eugen von Blass is prominentlylisted in "Popular 19th Century Painting, A Dictionary of Europe Genre Painters" by Philip Hook and Mark Poltimore. - Both works are 5.7" H x 4" W.
