EARLY STONEWARE COOLER WITH INCISED EAGLE AND FLAG DECORATION. Attributed to Ohio. Iron based slip or glaze. Cobalt blue on the tips of the wings, head, tail, flag, and stripes on the shield. Unusual stamped star designs throughout the decoration. A brown rough textured glaze was applied on the lower wings, legs, and alternating stripes of the shield. Ovoid shaped with three raised lines around the foot and a finely combed wavy line around the top which runs beneath the large handles. Three faint initials on the back were of applied raised clay and are now missing. Raised rings around the spout. Possibly a presentation piece and was passed down through a family with veterans of both the Revolutionary and Civil wars and lived in Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Ohio. Found outside of the Dayton, Ohio area. Crack on the left side of the eagle. 20 1/2"h.
