Title: A Treatise on Mensuration, both in theory and practice
Author: Hutton, Charles Description: xxvi, 646, [2] pp. With woodcut diagrams by Thomas Bewick; copper-engraved plate. (4to) 9x6¾, period calf, rebacked preserving original spine strip, raised bands, recent morocco label in period style. First Edition. Thomas Bewick's first illustrating assignment, creating the diagrams to illustrate this geometric text on measurement of length, area and volumes. Bewick was an apprentice when he undertook the illustrations in this book, in the process of perfecting the technique of wood engraving. This first endeavor helped to start his long career as a book illustrator. Ink ownership signatures of C. Pope and Samuel B. Pope to front endpapers, the latter dated 1834, and C. Pope again to the title-page; ink inscription on first page of subscribers names, dated 1928, stating "This book undoubtedly belonged to Christopher Pope of Bristol, who built the blast furnace in Tynycoitre Machen..."
